Microsoft have announced that the official end of support has been extended from 14th January 2020 to 13th October 2020. Although this gives a number of small businesses a few more months of official updates and support, this is still should be replaced sooner rather than waiting till October 2020.
What does end of support mean?
Like most Microsoft products, Exchange has a support life-cycle which Microsoft will provide new features, bug fixes, security fixes and provide support for their products. This typically will last 10 years from the initial release date of the product.
When Exchange 2010 reaches its end of support on 13th October 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide:
- Technical support for problems that may occur
- Bug fixes for issues that are discovered and that may impact stability and usability of the server
- Security fixes for vulnerabilities that are discovered and that may make the server vulnerable to security breaches
- Time zone updates
Installations of Exchange 2010 will continue to run after this dates, however as a majority of Exchange 2010 servers would have been installed onto Windows Server 2008 and this product is end of support life on 14th January 2020 it would be advisable to consider migration of email to either Office 365 or another on-premise Exchange 2016 server
If you are running Exchange Server 2010 and would like to discuss the options for migration please contact us on 0333 332 6600.
