Microsoft Windows 365 is coming

Soon after Microsoft announced its new Windows 11, Microsoft have announced that they are providing Windows 365 as a cloud service.  This will allow businesses to access a cloud based desktop with Microsoft’s Office 365 (AKA Microsoft 365) and allow users to work effectively with the Microsoft Azure Server platform.

Microsoft’s Windows 365 will be packaged on a monthly subscription basis and users can be assigned the machine type they need by the administrator.    The machines are deployed within a few minutes and everything will be installed and setup with the users Microsoft 365 account and the access it provides to email, one drive, sharepoint and teams.

What are hosted desktops

A hosted desktop is a desktop environment that the user connects to from another location. The device you connect from can be a thin client that has limited resources and accesses a device that provides the virtual environment with applications and resources the user need to access.

Businesses have been using remote desktop for many years.  These have either been via the built in Remote desktop function in Windows professional products or users would connect to a Windows Server or VMware or Citrix Servers that has Remote Desktop Services enabled and licensed.  Typically, users would share a server that has multiple CPU cores and large amounts of memory as well as shared disk to provide them with a shared desktop environment.

User Experience

Microsoft Windows 365 will provide a seamless experience for the user that will allow them to work wherever the user is.  If you are working at home or in an office the experience should remain the same.  Remote Desktops function well in low bandwidth environments as they only send the video/keyboard and mouse instructions back and forth and all of the work is handled by the servers processors.  Printing documents can be slower than a locally printed document and we look forward to testing how the Microsoft Windows 365 platform performs.

As some users require more resources than others each user would be given their own virtual device using VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) that allows the server to manage the virtual desktop centrally and can be deployed when the user requires them.  The VDI allows different users to be load balanced between servers and resources can be adjusted easily.  For example, if you need extra memory to run some large excel spreadsheets at the end of the month, the memory can be increased and then decreased once you no longer require the memory.
